October saw us welcome Clark, Austin, Morgan and their families.

Some sunny days enabled us to have more outdoor play and the children are doing very well at keeping their hats on.  Please remember to send in a hat, which is labelled with the child’s name.  The centre will provide sunscreen.  As this is some of the babies first summer, please check with staff that the brand of sunscreen we are using does not cause an allergic reaction.

Happy October birthdays to Georgia and Sophie.

Introducing Solids

By about six months, your baby will start to control their tongue.  They will be able to hold their head up and become interested in food.

At this time breast milk or formula is still the most important food.  You can start to introduce solid food after a breast or bottle feed.

How to introduce solids

· Give baby one new food at a time

· Offer small amounts (1/2- 2 teaspoons)

Offer new food in the morning.  You then have the day to note any reactions

What foods to start with

· Smooth bland foods are easier for your baby to take and less likely to cause a reaction.

A suggested order of introduction could be:

Baby cereal made into a smooth paste with either breast milk or formula

Vegetables – start with pumpkin, potato, sweet potato and carrots (one at a time).  Then move to stronger flavours such as cauliflower.

Fruit – pureed eg. apple, pear mashed until smooth eg. banana, watermelon.

Remember introduce vegetables before fruit so your baby does not get a taste for sweet foods first and refuse vegies.
