During March and April children have been given the opportunity for sensory exploration. They have great joy in identifying properties and functions of objects and materials found both indoors and outdoors. This has included dancing with scarves, discovering dinosaurs in sand and bathing dolls. By co ordinating all their senses with motor skills the children are beginning to increase their skills in more complex ways. This includes carrying objects, dumping and filling. It has also increased their eye hand co ordination in puzzles, activity centres, block building, ball games, art activities and musical instruments. Eye feet co ordination is also developing with climbing, balancing, running, jumping and dancing. Another area has been tactile exploration where children can touch, rub and squeeze materials as finger, sponge and block painting. They can feel different types of material whether it is paper, fabric, plastic or natural, see the different shapes and feel the weight variance. As carers we provide language to describe and explain what is being discovered. We encourage children to wonder whether the water will run up in water play or the sand will flow through a pipe in sand play. Children are always learning through play. Special events during the two months have been painting green for St Patrick's Day, an Italian lunch for Harmony Week, a visit to the Pet Shop and an Easter Egg Hunt. Just a reminder to parents to please include a warm jacket in their child’s bag as we still do explore outdoors on those cooler days. Barb, Shirley, Alicia, Tracey, Tara, Ashleigh and Cherie.
