SUNSHINE ROOM
This month we have been focusing on social interactions. Many of us are showing interest in our friends and have begun the process of forming friendships and moving toward more group orientated play. We have been encouraging positive interactions between peers, exploring the concepts of gentleness and caring with an aim to understand the meaning of compassion. This is a work in progress and these ideas will not fully be understood until the children are much older. However, it is important to lay those building blocks and to develop those early concepts and ideas relating to the basics for forming friendships. Even though the toddler years are mostly ‘ego-centric’, when children are in group care situations they do begin to understand and develop social interest at a young age. It is important that we teach children how to ‘get along’ and how to engage each other in meaningful interactions while we provide a secure and supportive base for their development. With this in mind we have been exploring small group activities, inviting others to join in our play with support from our teachers, learning how to say ‘stop’ when something occurs we do not like, showing consideration for our friends when they are sad or upset and joining in with laughter in those fun moments throughout the day. Some of us are even seeking our friends to play games such as hide and seek and chasings. Music has also been an important part of our program. We have been singing many songs and are very accomplished at all the songs and actions. Our favourites are “The Wheels on the Bus”, “Row, Row”, “Open, shut then” and Helen's speciality, “Roly Poly” Bec and Sunshine Room Staff
